Clenching/Grinding of Teeth:
Clenching and grinding of the teeth is commonly caused by a bite that doesn’t match up on the top and bottom. Grinding your teeth can quickly cause pain, headaches and jaw popping. Over time, teeth could possibly even become loose, chipped or broken.
Speech Impediments: When the bite is off in your mouth, you may experience difficulty producing the noise associated with the letters “d” “n” and “t.” Because a misaligned bite can interfere with the location of the tongue tip movement, it could make saying these letters inaccessible, resulting in a speech impediment.
TMJ Pain: This refers to the connection of the skull (the temporal bone) to the lower jaw (the mandible) which controls jaw movement. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) can create serious discomfort and pain. Pain experienced by TMJ is a reaction to the closing of the upper and lower portions of the mouth. In these instances, the muscles in the jaw overextend to bring the top and bottom rows of teeth together to close. This can make chewing very difficult and sometimes even painful for those who suffer with this condition.
Gingivitis & Tooth Decay: Teeth that are overcrowded, crooked and misaligned are especially difficult to keep clean due to the inability to reach every part of the teeth when brushing/flossing. This can lead to severe tooth decay and possibly even gingivitis.
